Playdough Laboratory

Imagine that you are one of the ancient machines responsible for experimenting with lifeforms, and you look up at the sky and see a cloud shaped like a bunny rabbit. You say to yourself, “Self, I can make something that looks like that. Should I make it slither, or should I make it hop?” If you are a conscious entity, you can do almost anything you imagine. Having the basic building blocks provided by DNA and an organic machine that builds DNA creatures based upon the code, you have the Playdough of life.

If you understand what all of the bits of DNA mean and can manipulate them at will, you can make any creature you want. Just think of the thousands of variations that might have been made in a “life laboratory” over the millennia, allowed to interact with the world, and then when they didn’t work out were discarded. Species diversity is much easier to engineer if you make “educated engineering guesses” and check your results than it is to wait for genetic aberrations to “evolve” them. Intelligent machine creation beats random changes every time.
